Why make this website now? My old one has been gone for years. I could have restarted it at any time. So why now?

It’s the confluence of two events. First, I had a scary problem at work. I went to update a website, pretty routine stuff. But when I went to edit one of the pages, WordPress wouldn’t load the Divi editor. And then the auto-save kicked in and somehow it removed all content from the page. Like the front page of the website. The front page of a church’s website. On the Friday before Christmas.

Turns out there was a conflict between the new WordPress editor and the Divi editor. Once we reverted back to the “classic” WP editor, the Divi editor was able to load. Problem solved.  But it got me thinking. I used to be a whiz at managing and maintaining WordPress sites. Heck, I hosted one at home on a Linux web server for years at one time. So why did it take me all afternoon and the help of others to figure this out? I’m out of practice, that’s why. I should have my own WordPress site and get my hands dirty again.

And the second event? Facebook. It’s not an event, but more of a trend. Like many others, I have been increasingly concerned with Facebook’s trustworthiness. Then I read this the other day. It really made me think that I should consider ditching Facebook, or at the very least severely restricting my use of it. Problem is, if I do that a lot of my online presence disappears. What to do?

The answer to both problems is this website.
