I saw something in my Facebook feed about Pete Buttigieg and his husband adopting their first child. Someone had made a lengthy comment along the lines of (and I’m paraphrasing here) “I hope he repents. Because they are living in sin and although I love the sinner I hate the sin,” etc. etc. It was a sizable paragraph of that sentiment.
I’m not religious myself, but I did study religion in college. It was my second major for a couple of years, in fact. So I know at least a little something about the religious traditions of the world including and especially the western Christian one. Also, I have strong feelings about this anti-gay stuff. So I decided to chime in and drop a little reality check on this commenter. So I typed “Fuck you” and clicked submit.
Not what you expected? Hear me out. When someone says being gay is wrong because God, what I hear is a hearty fuck you to a whole lot of people. Sure, they may dress it up in some sanctimonious bullshit language, but in the end it’s still just a giant middle finger to people they don’t like. That being the case, I see no reason not to respond in kind. In fact, I think at some level it may be more authentic and honest to do so.
And let’s face it: if you’re going to say that kind of shit in a public forum in 2021 you should absolutely expect to get some f-bombs directed back at you. And, well–if you didn’t know, now you know.
