I took another pass at the Jazz bass set up this evening and after straightening the neck another smidge I was able to get the B string to 5/64s and the rest going all the way down to 4/64s on the D and G strings. Not a buzz anywhere.
That’s about the same action I now have on the Warwick. They both play like superstars now and I am thrilled.
There’s a few items to attend, however. I glued the Warwick’s nut back in today. But the tuners are wiggly and the rosewood fingerboard needs cleaning and conditioning with oil. I have some oil on order. I also need to address a high 13th fret on the treble side. I have a sanding block, a crowning file, and some fret erasers. Hopefully it will be a quick fix. Then it’s going to get a new set of DR Sunbeams. I’m going to try taking a break from the Lo-Riders. Maybe I would like a little more flex in my string. We’ll see.
The Fender bass needs the rosewood oiled, too. But I discovered today that the pickups are frozen. I might not care that much if they were at the right height, but they are both quite low (which could explain the surprisingly low output of the guitar). I guess I’ll have to take that new pick guard off and see what foam or springs are under those pickups. Whatever it is, it’ll probably have to be replaced. Then the Fender bass will get DR Neon blue strings. Just for fun. If I like them, maybe I’ll get a set of green for the Warwick next time it needs a new set.
